## A career change doesn't mean erasing everything you've built. For most professionals, it's about redeploying your experience somewhere it can do more for you and for the right employer.

---

We hear it all the time in our conversations with candidates: "I want to change directions, but I'm worried I'll have to go back to square one." It's one of the most common fears we encounter as recruiters, and one of the most unfounded.

The truth is, the majority of career transitions aren't vertical drops. They're lateral moves that leverage everything you already bring to the table. The skills, professional judgement, and working relationships you've developed over years don't disappear when you step into a new industry. In most cases, they're exactly what makes you stand out in one.

| # 39% | of Australians have already done it. Research shows more than 1 in 3 people have switched to a completely different industry at some point in their career and a further 37% would consider it. |
| --- | --- |

## Get honest about why you want to move

Before updating your CV or scrolling through job boards, the most valuable thing you can do is sit with a simple question: what specifically isn't working, and what would "better" actually look like?

Career changes driven by vague dissatisfaction often lead to the same frustrations in a different postcode. But career changes grounded in clarity, a real mismatch between your strengths and your current role, a shift in your values, a ceiling you've genuinely hit, tend to result in moves that stick.

Action precedes clarity, not the other way around. You don't need to have everything figured out before you start exploring. You just need a direction to move in. If you're not sure where to start, try noticing which parts of your current role energise you versus which consistently drain you. The patterns are usually more telling than any career quiz.

## Your transferable skills are worth more than you think

Industry research consistently shows that 83% of hirers say they're willing to compromise on direct experience if a candidate brings strong transferable skills. What matters most to future employers are often the capabilities that can't be taught quickly on the job: how you communicate, how you solve problems, how you navigate complexity, and how you lead.

| | | | |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| ### Client & Stakeholder Management | | ### Communication & Influence | |
| Understanding how to manage expectations, build trust, and navigate difficult conversations is valuable in virtually every industry. | | Whether written, verbal, or presentational, the ability to communicate clearly and persuasively crosses all industry lines. | |
| | | | |
| ### Problem Solving & Analysis | | ### Leadership & Accountability | |
| Structured thinking and the ability to break down complex challenges is a skill employers seek regardless of the technical context. | | Managing people, projects, or outcomes demonstrates initiative and ownership, qualities that travel well across sectors. | |

## Test the water before you leap

One of the most common mistakes career changers make is treating the decision as binary: stay in my current role or make a full pivot. In reality, there's a wide spectrum of ways to test a new direction without walking away from your income or your professional standing.

| ## 1 | **Shadow or informational interview** Spend half a day with someone in a role you're interested in. What you learn in four hours with a practitioner is worth weeks of online research. --- |
| --- | --- |
| ## 2 | **Contract or temp-to-hire placements** A contract role in a new sector lets you test the environment, prove your value, and build credibility, without the pressure of a permanent commitment on either side. --- |
| ## 3 | **Targeted short courses or certifications** You rarely need a full degree to signal capability in a new field. A focused certification demonstrates commitment and bridges the visible gap between your background and the role. --- |
| ## 4 | **Volunteer or pro bono work** Hands-on experience, even unpaid, builds real-world examples for interviews and helps you confirm whether a new direction genuinely excites you. --- |
| ## 5 | **Strategic lateral moves** Sometimes a sideways step, at a similar level, in a parallel industry, positions you for faster growth in the direction you actually want to go. It's not a step back; it's a set-up. --- |

## Reframe your story for the role you want

A career change asks something of you that most job applications don't: It asks you to connect two different professional narratives into one coherent story. That's not spin. Done well, it's one of the most compelling things a candidate can offer.

In interviews, have a clear, confident answer ready for the inevitable question: "Why are you making this change?" The best answers don't apologise for the transition, they explain what attracted you to the new direction, and why your background makes you unusually well-suited to it. Curiosity and intentionality are assets. Own them.

---

The bottom line: Changing careers in 2026 is less about starting over and more about moving forward with intention. The professionals who do it well don't abandon what they've built, they find the environments where it's most valued, position themselves with clarity, and let the right people help them make the connection.
